The intention in mental and emotional healing is to facilitate the release of emotional energies repressed by the mind. This may happen by a memory arising to consciousness, followed by an emotional release. If this is not the time for such a release, the healing will be experienced as a deep quieting for the mind.
Although you can use the SHK at any point of the treatment, and in any area, a particularly effective way to use it is this: Place your hands to the third eye, one hand at the front of the head and one at the back. Then use the following sequence:
- Name of person three times
- CKR (with mantra) three times
- SHK (with mantra) three times
- CKR (with mantra) three times
Sei Heki Chiryô Hô
The sei heki chiryô is a remarkably powerful technique, and can be used to change unwanted thought processes (even unconscious ones), or behavioural patterns and addictions (e.g. smoking). The power of this technique can seem miraculous, and if you are adept at creating strong, positive affirmations, you can use it in any number of different situations.
Hawayo Takata taught that this technique should be given for fifteen minutes each day, until the person is better.1Quoted in Seiheki Chiryo Ho by James Deacon, aetw.org/d_seiheiki.html, accessed 21 October 2016.
Begin by establishing what the client (or you) would like to change, and agree on a positive, believable, affirmation. For example, if the client has self-worth issues, an affirmation could be “I am a beautiful, valuable and unique expression”. For smoking, it could be “I am successfully living a smoke-free existence”. Ensure the language used is positive and in a present tense. Don’t use words like “not” (e.g. “I am successfully not smoking”), as we want to focus on what we do want, not what we don’t want.
Tell your client that she will use the affirmation to focus during the technique. When her mind wanders, she can gently bring it back to the affirmation.
- Ask your client to sit in a chair, close her eyes, and relax.
- Start with gasshô breathing, to calm and centre yourself.
- Visualise the SHK and CKR, silently repeating the mantras, on the client’s occipital ridge—the base of the skull—and cover it with your dominant hand, letting Reiki flow.
- Place your non-dominant hand on the client’s forehead, and let Reiki flow.
- Repeat the affirmation three times, silently or out loud.
- Visualise SHK and CKR (with mantra) and hold for five minutes, or as long as you feel is right.
- Remove your hand from your forehead while keeping the other hand in place and relax, for up to 5 minutes.
- End by giving thanks with hands in gasshô.
The procedure for a self-treatment is the same, except that it is easiest to lie down instead of sitting in a chair.
Ritual of Manifestation and Release
As you become conscious of specific issues that you want to work on, you find that reiki can make powerful changes in your life. Try not to overwhelm yourself by trying to change everything at once. Take things a step at a time, and work with one issue at a time. Remember that these patterns may have been with you for many years, and it will take careful, patient attention to free yourself.
For the ritual you will need a lighted candle and a fire-proof dish. Decide what you want to work on. Do you want to let go of a specific issue, or manifest something new in life? Once you have decided what you wish to work on, write it down on a piece of paper. Examine what the issue means to you. For example, what is jealousy to you? How does it make you feel? What does it look like in someone else? What other times in your life did you feel jealous? If you want to manifest something new, begin to visualise now what life will be like with the change you desire, for example, a salary raise.
Next, think of an affirmation that will empower the release of this issue. The affirmation should use positive language in a present tense, focusing on what you do want rather than what you don’t want. ‘I am releasing the patterns that create jealousy in my experience’ is a more positive and powerful affirmation than ‘I am not a jealous person.’
When you have settled on your affirmation or manifestation to your liking, write it down in the centre of a separate sheet of paper, perhaps A4 size. Draw the CKR on the four corners of the paper. Then draw all three symbols on top of each other, as a mandala, on the back of the piece of paper to empower your intention. Fold the paper now.
Finally, using the candle, light the piece of paper, place it in the dish and allow it to burn. With the fire and the mythic power of the symbols, you can bring about dramatic changes in the direction your life takes.
